For the July Care Corner, we will be supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. There are three locations in Iowa City – The Ronald McDonald House, along with Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at St. Lukes and at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Ronald McDonald facilities provide lodging, meals, snacks, showers and other “home-away-from-home” amenities to families with critically ill or injured children. Their services allow families to stay closer to their children, and alleviate some of the financial burden and stress of having a child in the hospital.
In the Care Corner, we will happily accept any of the following to support the Ronald McDonald House:
HOUSEHOLD ITEMS: Scent- and dye-free HE laundry pods and dryer sheets; paper towels; plastic utensils; postage stamps; batteries
TOILETRIES: Deodorant; toothbrushes; toothpaste; lotions; shampoo/conditioner; body wash; liquid hand soap
FOOD ITEMS: Individually wrapped granola bars, trail mix, etc.; ready microwave meals; baby food; bottled water; hot chocolate packets
FAMILY ITEMS: Family Blue-ray DVDs (G or PG); Xbox 360 & Xbox One family games (E); gift cards (Wal-Mart, HyVee, Casey’s, Visa)
In addition, we will be collecting toys for the Toy Closet. Every child (usually siblings of the patient) who checks into a Ronald McDonald House receives a voucher for a toy that they can select from the Toy Closet. They receive many donations of toys during the holidays, but tend to run low this time of the year. Toys should be in original packaging, and please no puzzles, Matchbox cars or coloring books.
A more comprehensive list of needed items can be found at: https://rmhc-eiwi.org/get-involved/wishlists/
Finally, we will be collecting aluminum tabs from soup and beverage cans. These tiny tabs really add up! Each year the Iowa City location receives more than $14,000 in revenue from recycled aluminum from can tabs.
Many families in our own congregation have benefited from the services of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Please join us in supporting this very helpful cause!
