The name comes from the Greek word pentekoste which means fiftieth, referring to the 50-day count after Passover in the Jewish calendar. Pentecost remembers the biblical event where the Holy Spirit manifested as wind and fire, empowering the Apostles to speak in different languages and proclaim the Gospel.
What is God's purpose at Pentecost? Therefore, God's purpose at
Pentecost was to equip His church with the mighty power of the Holy Spirit so that we would be His witnesses to all the nations, resulting in His eternal glory.
The Holy Spirit is compared to water. Water comes down to the earth in the form of rain and makes each tree yield its fruit. Also, the Holy spirit is compared to the wind. The power of the wind is tremendous. Air brakes can stop a giant truck from going down the highway.
It was by the power of the Holy Spirit that the incarnation took place, Jesus was baptized and raised by the same Spirit.
Holy Spirit works in our lives. Holy spirit brings about transformation in our lives. The Holy Spirit fills us with peace and joy.
